TheSubjection of Women was written to appeal to men and show them the benefits of equality. Mill writes, “It may seem a waste of reasoning to argue against a bad joke; but such things do affect people’s minds; and I have heard men quote this saying, with an air as if they thought there was something in it” (p. 460).
JohnStuart Mill credited his wife, Harriet Taylor Mill, with co-writing the essay. While some scholars agreed by 2009 that John Stuart Mill was the sole author, it is also noted that some of the arguments are similar to Harriet Taylor Mill's essay The Enfranchisement of Women which was published in 1851.
TaylorMill believed that "the protection of high breeding is indispensable." But she opened up the concept of high breeding to a wide spectrum of meanings. It was "nature," she argued, to those who were "fine," or aristocratic. It seemed to be less "nature" with respects the poor, the ignorant, or the low.
